Speed Dating - Will it Work For You?

Before being well-publicized due to movies like Hitch and The 40-year-old Virgin and programs like Sex and the City, The L Word and reality game shows as The 5th Wheel, speed dating actually originated from a Jewish rabbi who created it as a tool to help Jewish singles meet and marry. Since then, hundreds of people from different walks of life have used this to meet new people.

It works this way:

• An organizer forms an equal group of men and women.
• They are rotated so they can meet and talk to each other for usually just less than 10 minutes, referred to as "dates".
• At the time, the organizer makes a signal (clinking glass, ringing a bell, etc.) so the participants can move on to the next person (date).
• As the event draws to a close, the participants would let the organizers know of their preferences by giving a list of who they would like to divulge their personal contact information to.
• If a match has been made, contact information of both parties is given out. (The information cannot be given during the "date" so as not to pressure a person to accept or reject a "date.")
• This works with a fee, of course. These events usually have advance registration. But if there are an unequal number of participants, they may allow some walk-ins, especially if to balance the gender ratio.

The biggest advantage of speed dating is also its' biggest disadvantage: The element of time and speed. You need to make a good impression in a limited amount of time - fast. While the avoidance of face-to-face rejection is a big plus, the pressure may be too much for some. The challenge would probably be for those people who have trouble starting conversations.

Obviously, speed dating doesn't work on anyone. There, you meet all kinds of people: Timid, aggressive, outspoken, sometimes even conservative ones.
